The community of Uaxactún, Petén, inaugurated the “AGUAxactún” Water Purification Plant, an infrastructure that improves access to safe drinking water and strengthens the sustainable management of local resources.
The project addresses one of the priorities defined by the community in its Climate-Smart Development Plan for Uaxactún, which is part of the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund. It was made possible through the joint efforts of the community, government institutions, and supporting organizations.

Under the leadership of WCS, the initiative brought together efforts from the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the Association of Forest Communities of Petén (ACOFOP), the Organization for Management and Conservation (OMYC), the Community Development Council (COCODE) of Uaxactún, and the Municipality of Flores, among other partners.
The launch of AGUAxactún represents a tangible step forward in improving community well-being and environmental sustainability within the Maya Biosphere Reserve.
AGUAxactún stands today as a collective achievement, driven by the community.
